The ADHD Bear

— for cubs —
a small note for the grown-up reading aloud

This is a short picture book for an ADHD cub — or a cub who feels a lot, a lot of the time.

It says: your brain is a bear brain. Bear brains are good. Bear brains sometimes need a kettle. The kettle is the slow bit, when nothing is happening and you might have to wait. Waiting is the medicine.

Read it slowly. Stop on any page that the cub wants to stop on. Look at the bear together. The point is the looking, not the reading.

one

This is the bear.

The bear has a bear brain.

The bear brain is fast.

two

The bear has lots of ideas.

One. Two. Three. Four. Eleven.

The bear cannot hold them all.

three

The bear's leg goes, sometimes, at dinner.

That is alright.

The leg is a bear's way of saying hello.

four

The bear watches the kettle.

The kettle is slow.

At first, the bear hates it.

After a little while, the bear is calm.

five

The bear has a friend.

The friend has a bear brain too.

They look at a leaf, together.

six

You are a bear.

Your brain is a good brain.

You are not too much.

You are exactly enough.

The bear is small enough to carry.

The bear keeps.
